Expectations
Homework
Students have planners and they are expected to fill them out every day with homework and classwork assignments. Parents need to initial every day to show they have seen what homework has been assigned.
Planners are a great place for us to communicate back and forth about homework.
When your child enters the classroom in the morning, they are expected to turn in all homework after they have hung up their backpack.
You can expect your child to have math homework every night. I will also require 100 minutes of reading each week. We will work with spelling and vocabulary in class and occasionally your child may bring home spelling, vocabulary or other language homework. I would expect your child to have about 40 minutes of homework each night, Monday - Thursday.
Behavior
In room 20 I expect children to follow our school rules:
Be Safe
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Calendar
One of the things I will work on with your child this year is the concept of long term and short term planning. I use a calendar to show things that are coming up in class. This calendar can be found in their planner. I try to explain to kids that just because an assignment isn’t due tomorrow, we can still do things today to be working towards completing it.
A Few Other Things
Reading Counts: All students will be given access in class to our Reading Counts program. Reading Counts is an online program where students earn points by taking tests on books they have read independently.
Battle of the Books: Students form teams and read books. They then battle against other teams by answering questions about details in the books. This takes place in January.
Laptops: In room 20 we have a cart of laptop computers. Each student is assigned a computer to use. We use computers quite often in class.
Field Trips: We are very fortunate to have a wonderful PTO that provides support for our children to attend several field trips throughout fifth grade. I will provide more information on field trips as soon as I get dates.
